Hacktivist group Anonymous threatens Middle East oil firms with attacks

The Anonymous group of hactivists is threatening to launch a cyber attack this week against Middle East oil firms and oil-rich Arab governments in the Gulf.

The attack, under the hashtag #OpPetrol, is expected to be launched Friday, the organizers have indicated in online forums. The hackers involved are thought to be mainly based in the Middle East.

Some hackers have charged that Arab governments in the region are collaborating with Israel and working against Muslim interests.

While the exact nature of the plans are unclear, security firm Symantec says that based on previous incidents, the hackers will likely launch denial of service (DDoS) attacks, phishing attacks on mails, vulnerable software exploration and possibly website defacement.

"Anonymous disagrees with the US dollar being used as the currency to buy and sell oil," Symantec posted online.

"Public announcements by these groups are often used as a means to gain notoriety or media attention and can be of highly volatile credibility."
