US may cut its troops in Afghanistan to less than 10,000

The US authorities do not rule out that the number of US troops in Afghanistan may be limited to 10,000 people. This is what some representatives of the US administration, who are following the discussion of this issue, announced on April 21.

Earlier, the US government believed that 10,000 would be the optimal number of American servicemen in Afghanistan for the Afghans to be able to form their own security forces. However, now, some US officials are saying that this number may be cut down more than by one half.

According to representatives of the US administration, the American contingent in Afghanistan will be engaged mainly in fighting against terrorism and helping Afghan law-enforcement structures. The Afghans would be quite able to cope with these tasks even with the help of a small American contingent, experts believe.

A high-ranking US official says that at present, his colleagues are holding a lively discussion about whether the US contingent in Afghanistan may be cut.

At present, the US contingent in Afghanistan counts 33,000 people, which is 3 times less than it was in 2011.
