Snowden asks Russian law enforcement for protection against US threats

The former NSA agent and current whistleblower Edward Snowden is asking the Russian law enforcement for security, announced his lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena. Snowden is concerned for his safety after the recent threats coming from the US officials.

Threats about Edward Snowden’s health and security have been published in various mass media during the last week.

In response to that, his lawyer stated: “We are concerned with the situation around Edward. We see the statements made by some US officials containing potential and implicit threats and openly calling for causing him bodily harm.”

One of the articles on BuzzFeed published words of the US intelligence officer who provided in details the full explanation of the possible Snowden’s capture.

“We would end it very quickly... Just casually walking on the streets of Moscow, coming back from buying his groceries. Going back to his flat and he is casually poked by a passerby. He thinks nothing of it at the time starts to feel a little woozy and thinks it’s a parasite from the local water. He goes home very innocently and next thing you know he dies in the shower,” he stated.

Another Pentagon official announced that he would “put a bullet in his [Snowden’s] head,” if he was not “restricted from killing an American.”

“This is a real death threat and we are concerned about the fact it has prompted no reaction from anybody. That is why we will file a request to the police… We will ask the law enforcers to examine and investigate all such statements,” Kucherena said.

The lawyer has underlined that according to the Russian law, a death threat carries criminal liability.

As Snowden was granted asylum from Russia, he is allowed to seek security from local police.

In his interview to the Russian TV channel, Vesti 24, Kucherena stated that Snowden is accompanied everywhere by his private guards. However, with recent threats coming from the US it might not be enough.

Kucherena also emphasized that he is going to ask the US authorities to look into mass media articles and give their own assessment of those statements.

“The people who make extremist statements do so while wearing a mask – they do not reveal their identities. We will ask for these people’s masks to come off. We must know who this NSA officer is, who issues orders about ways to eliminate Edward Snowden,” Kucherena said.

Previously, two of the top lawmakers in the US intelligence claimed that Snowden used to work with Russian security services, providing them the information. The Congress is now considering this, trying to understand if that was the reason for revealing one of the hugest leaks in the US National Security history.
