Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry has claimed that Olympic facilities in Sochi, Russia, are safe from potential natural cataclysms during the Winter Olympics in February next year.

"An interagency working group noted the high degree of safety of Olympic facilities against natural threats and wrote reports that include recommendations for further improving safety systems in the mountain clusters of Sochi," the ministry said in a statement posted on its website on Wednesday.

The group checked the organization of the defense of sports and transportation facilities against mudslides and avalanches and examined areas where natural disaster hazards are particularly high, the statement said.

The group included experts from the Emergency Situations Ministry, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (Roshydromet), and the Federal Agency for Mineral Resources (Rosnedra).
