Britain will pull 1,900 troops out of Afghanistan by the autumn, Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said on Wednesday, bringing the total number down to 6,000.

The withdrawal was in line with the British government's plans to reduce its forces to about 5,200 by the end of 2013, he said. All NATO combat troops are to be withdrawn from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

During a visit to troops in Afghanistan last month, Prime Minister David Cameron said Britain would continue to run the country's officer training academy, and provide financial support.
