Matrosskaya Tishina detention facility inmate Oleg Topalov who escaped early on Tuesday morning might have used a spoon to dig his way to freedom through the ceiling, a source in law enforcement told Interfax.

"The only tool suitable for making a hole in the ceiling O. Topalov could have in his cell was a spoon," he said.

The inmate must have used it to dig his way out, he added. Cells are regularly checked for prohibited items, the source said to support the theory. Rostov regional police started searching for Topalov in 2010 on suspicion of theft. He fled to Moscow where he shot and killed someone. The suspect was apprehended in the end of 2011.
