Christ the Savior Easter night ceremony over in Moscow

The Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill has completed the night time Easter service at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow.

The service was attended by about five thousand people. However, many had left the church early to catch the last subway train home.

The Moscow metro’s hours were extended until two in the morning, and the patriarchal Easter service ended at 02:30 MSK.

The Easter morning service, which began around midnight, was attended by the leaders of the Russian state.

A special solemn procession was conducted at midnight, around the cathedral, symbolizing the march of the Myrrh-bearers to the tomb.

As its was finished, a triumphant cry of "Christ is risen" was sounded.

During the service, the Gospel was read in 18 languages, including Aramaic, the language of the time of Christ's life.

Festive Easter services are held in all churches of the Russian Orthodox Church. Worldwide there are about 30 thousand parishes.

President Putin and PM Medvedev attend Easter Service in Moscow

The solemn Easter night service has almost come to a close at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. At the start of the ceromony Patriarch Kirill and the accompanying clergy entered the church with candles to cries of "Christ is risen! He is risen indeed."

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and his wife, the mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, other public figures and politicians are all attendance at the Christ the Savior Cathederal.

Despite the fact that the temple is accessible only to those who have invitations, there were about five thousand people present.

Holy Fire arrives in Moscow

The Holy Fire from Jerusalem has been brought to Moscow and arrived at Vnukovo International Airport being carried by a delegation from the the fund of St. Andrew.

The flame which arrived in Moscow was part of the Holy Fire that was ignited in the the Temple of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

The Holy Fire was brought to Moscow on a special charter flight.

The delegation led by the chairman of the board of trustees of the fund, who is also the president of Russian Railways, Vladimir Yakunin, has delivered the Holy Fire to the Church of Christ the Savior.

It was passed to the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill, who is conducting a festive Easter service.

The holy fire kindled every year on the eve of Easter on Holy Saturday at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, symbolizing the miraculous light of the Resurrection of Christ.
