Kurils rattled by quake

A series of three closely-timed earthquakes – measuring 6.7, 6.3 and 6.6 on the Richter scale – has shaken parts of the Russian Far East.

The epicenter was located in the Pacific Ocean a little more than 100km to the southeast of Severo-Kurilsk on Paramushir Island of the Kuril chain. The shocks were felt as far as Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on Kamchatka Peninsula.

There is no word of damage or casualties in the quakes.

American-issued tsunami alerts have been called off.
