PLO furious over reports of Israeli-Hamas talks

The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) has been outraged at the news of Egyptian-brokered “indirect” talks between Israel and Hamas.

Jamal Muheissen, a member of the Central Committee of the Palestinian Fatah party, slammed the secret Cairo talks as illegal as only the PLO is authorized to conduct such negotiations.

Muheissen accused Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi of seeking to undermine the PLO’s status as the “sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people”.

Hamas negotiator Mahmoud Az-Zahar retorted that the talks focused purely on humanitarian issues such as enforcing the ceasefire in Gaza and reopening border checkpoints in line with the truce agreement signed last November.
