Ancient languages reconstructed

A team of Canadian and US linguists have found a way to reconstruct the so-called “proto-languages” once spoken by the ancestors of the modern linguistic groups and families.

The scientists hope the computer algorithm they developed would help recreate the history of human civilizations. The computer program looks for correlations between words in related languages by analyzing the words’ phonetic makeup.

The team has already reconstructed the language, which gave rise to 637 Austronesian languages spoken in parts of Southeast Asia and Oceania.
