Russian contingent in Tajikistan to remain neutral

The Russian contingent in Tajikistan will not be used to suppress protests in Khorog in case they are repeated, Secretary-General of the Collective Security Treaty organization Nikolai Bordyuzha said in an interview with a Moscow-based daily.

According to him, it is stationed to help Tajikistan to repulse external threats, and none of the agreements provides for the involvement of the Russian troops in the country’s internal affairs.

Last summer, a wave of protests against the republican leaders spread across Tajikistan’s Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous province.

Part of the population supported field commanders, and special operation was launched in Khorog to eliminate them. During the operation, 30 militants were killed and over 40 detained.
