Russia and China have again vetoed a Western-backed UN resolution threatening non-military sanctions against Syria. It was aimed at stepping a pressure against President Bashar al-Assad’s government to end the escalating 16-month conflict. Today is 11 to 2 vote with 2 abstentions to defy the future of the 300-strong UN peace-keeping force in Syria whose mandate expires tomorrow.

The situation in Syria is rapidly deteriorating. Yesterday a bombing in Damascus killed Syria’s Defense Minister and his Deputy. Here to talk more about the situation in Syria is Mikhail Roshin, he’s a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences. He joins us from our Moscow studio. And here in the US we’re joined by Dean Ahmed, he’s President of the Minaret Freedom Institute.
