US to reinforce naval presence in Persian Gulf

The United States will reinforce its naval power in the Persian Gulf in the light of tensions around Iran.

This came in a statement by the US Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Jonathan Greenert.

According to him, the US will double the number of mine sweepers and mine countermeasures helicopters from 4 to 8, and will send new generation remotely controlled submersibles to defuse mines in the Gulf. But the Admiral admitted that there’s been no sign of Iran’s Navy over-activity in the region thus far.

Earlier, the US doubled the number of its aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf. According to Greenert, a total of 30 combat ships have been deployed by the US in the Middle East.
