A peculiar video, showing several devotees offering prayers to an animal-shaped bin placed outside a temple for the first time, has quickly gone viral on social media, causing a storm of various reactions.

Being a nation with multiple faiths and beliefs, Indians often worship animals and even some inanimate objects. But recent footage of several women worshipping a fancy kangaroo trash can by mistake has provoked quite the controversy online.

In the short video, presumably captured in the Indian state of Bihar during the Chhath Puja festival dedicated to the Sun god, a group of women dressed in saris can be seen applying traditional vermilion red powder and sprinkling the figure with holy water, being unaware that it was just a trash can, installed inside a temple complex as part of the government's Clean India Campaign.

Stunned by what they have seen, countless internet users shared a vast variety of emotions, from admiration by the women's innocent naivety to shock and sadness.

Some netizens said poor literacy rate and lack of development in Bihar was to blame.
