Louis Leysath, 35, was serving a 30-year sentence at Maryland’s Jessup Correctional Institution for the 2008 murder of his girlfriend. He was found in unconscious Friday in his cell, which was filled with steam, prison officials said. He was declared dead after prison staff attempted resuscitation.
Prison spokesperson Mark Vernarelli said the death occurred “under unusual circumstance,” Reuters reported.
There was no fire in the cell, and no foul play is suspected. It is unclear whether the death was accidental or a suicide, Vernarelli added.
Leysath was housed alone.
An investigation of the death is underway, and Maryland Secretary of Public Safety and Correctional Services Stephen Moyer has called for an administrative review of the prison.
