WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Tensions continue to escalate on the Korean Peninsula as Pyongyang conducts ballistic missile tests with increased frequency. The latest test took place on July 4, when Pyongyang said it had successfully launched its first intercontinental ballistic missile Hwasong-14.
While the US believes that North Korea has successfully launched an ICBM for the first time, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the missile's type was medium-range, not intercontinental.
"[I] am not sanguine that the test on the 4th of July demonstrates that they have the capacity to strike the United States with any degree of accuracy or reasonable confidence or success," Selva told the US Senate Armed Services Committee.
The latest North Korean missile test reportedly came in response to the US-South Korean leaders’ meeting on June 30.
