MOSCOW (Sputnik) – In July, Trump said he would only support other NATO states should they be attacked if the allies had "fulfilled their obligations" with respect to Washington. The candidate of the Republican party won the elections on November 8.
"The US commitment to NATO and US commitment to the collective defense of Europe has been rock solid for almost 70 years and I’m absolutely confident that this will still be the case and the US will still be committed to defense of Europe and NATO obligations," Stoltenberg told a press conference.
Stoltenberg said he expected to meet Trump as soon as possible and was looking into the possibility of holding a telephone conversation with him.
"I would like to meet him as soon as possible and welcome him to the NATO summit in Brussels next year, but I will also of course reach out and look into the possibilities of having a conversation on the phone as soon as possible," Stoltenberg said.
