The United States has closed its embassy and consulates in Turkey amid a dangerous security situation in Ankara, the embassy said Tuesday, a day after Russian ambassador to the country was killed.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Monday, Russian Ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov was killed by a gunman at an art gallery exhibition opening in Ankara. Three other people were also injured in the attack. The Russian Foreign Ministry called the incident an act of terrorism.

The US embassy has also experienced security problems over the past day in what it called an ongoing "security incident." Shooting was reported near the embassy late on Monday, with US citizens advised to stay away from the area. An armed man was later detained by Turkish police as he tried to enter the building.
