WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The United States finds it difficult to trust Russian claims that humanitarian aid can safely be delivered to the Syrian city of Aleppo, a Department of State official told Sputnik.
“With continued violence taking place in Aleppo, it is difficult to trust Russia’s assertions that the path to providing aid in Aleppo is safe and secure for deliveries,” the official said.
On Wednesday, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said the United States, France and the United Nations have failed to offer aid to 90,000 Aleppo residents who were liberated from militants two days earlier.
According to the State Department official, Washington is urging Moscow to support a UN Security Council resolution now under discussion that would give aid-delivery workers access to eastern districts of Aleppo.
Also Wednesday, UN High Commissioner for Refugees spokesman Scott Craig told Sputnik that a plan to deliver humanitarian aid to eastern Aleppo is being discussed with all parties in the conflict.
On Tuesday, Russia’s Defense Ministry said Syrian government forces have cleared nearly half of the city’s eastern districts of militants, liberating tens of thousands residents.
