Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the US embargo imposed on Cuba decades ago inhumane.
"We do not find sanctions over Cuba right in both humane and conscientious sense," Erdogan told reporters after meeting with Cuban President Raul Castro, as quoted by the Anadolu news agency. He said that trade turnover between Turkey and Cuba amounted only to $28 billion due to the US embargo.
The Turkish president also said that Ankara wants to build a mosque in Cuba, adding that local authorities were not against the idea. However, the deal has not been finalized yet.
Erdogan is on a tour of Latin American countries seeking to strengthen business and cultural ties in the region. Erdogan has already visited Colombia and is heading to Mexico.
In December 2014, US President Barack Obama announced that Washington would reestablish diplomatic relations with Havana, as well as ease the five-decade-long US trade and travel restrictions imposed on Cuba.
