More than 200 cash-strapped female students at Queen's University Belfast have signed up to become sugar babies, earning around £5,000 to pay towards their crippling student debts.

According to the Seeking Arrangement website, the university tops the league of the fastest-growing student establishments where girls sign up to entertain rich men for money — often ending in sex. It comes as an increasing number of students are turning to more and more extreme ways of earning money to pay off their student loans.

The website, which is run out of offices in Las Vegas, Ukraine and Singapore, has just released figures which reveal that Queen's is the fastest growing sugar baby school of 2015, with a 49.41 per cent increase in newcomers from last year. Other universities in the league table include Exeter and Cambridge.

Seeking Arrangement CEO Brandon Wade said:

"Tripling tuition fees are crippling students, who are left to sort out how to afford their education. True, they can do it the hard way, but why struggle when there are people who are happy to help? An arrangement is where people are direct. It allows people to immediately define what they need and want in a relationship — everyone gets what they want."

The website says that the girls can sign-up to meet "attractive successful men and women who know what they want. They're driven, and enjoy attractive company by their side. Money isn't an issue, thus they are generous when it comes to supporting a sugar baby".

With the latest figures showing that three-quarters of graduates are unable to pay off their debts, girls are lured by the prospect of exotic trips and gifts, as well as a luxurious lifestyle with wealthy people.

The Higher Education Commission recently found that student debt is now so high — in comparison with average salaries — that many graduates will be unable to repay their fees even by the end of the 30-year repayment period.

An advertisement for the dating site even suggests the short-term bonus of earning big bucks as a sugar baby could lead to long-term job prospects. "Sugaring not only aids in the cost of pursuing an education, but a large majority of these men and women will have a more solid financial situation upon graduation — maybe even a job," it said.

The National Union of Students said the sex-for-student-loans issue was not confined merely to sugar babies. Its national women's officer Estelle Hart said: "In an economic climate where there are very few jobs, where student support has been massively cut, people are taking more work in the informal economy, such as sex work."

With many female students struggling to make ends meet, more and more are turning to sex to plug the gap.
