MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Brett McGurk, the US special presidential envoy for the international coalition to counter the Daesh, on Saturday informed of his arrival in the Iraqi city of Erbil after consultations on the ongoing Mosul operation with Iraqi leadership.
"Just arrived in #Erbil after consults in #Baghdad w/US military & diplomatic officials, Iraqi PM, President, Speaker, other key leaders," McGurk wrote on Twitter.
Erbil is an administrative center of Kurdish region in the northern Iraq. The United States has been providing military and financial support for Kurdish armed groups in the fight against the Daesh.
The Iraqi operation to liberate Mosul, which was occupied by Daesh (outlawed in Russia) in June 2014, has been ongoing since October 17. The offensive is led by Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and Iraqi soldiers backed by the US-led anti-terror coalition.
