"I had forgotten to ask my secretary to get my wife flowers the day before… This is why I said Valentine's Day should not be celebrated," Hussain said, explaining his anti-St. Valentine's Day tirade on Saturday.
Hussain said that Pakistanis shouldn't celebrate St. Valentine's Day because it is a Western holiday and not part of Pakistani culture.
"We should avoid Valentine Day as it has no connection with our culture," Hussain told a group of his countrymen while attending the death anniversary of one of Pakistani freedom activists in Islamabad.
After revealing the secret behind his sudden change of mind, the President said he had no idea that flower markets in Islamabad would be open on Sunday and that's why he thought he'd be better off to criticize the holiday than to face his wife without flowers.
"I was so sure they [flower shops] would be closed. This is why I said Valentine's Day shouldn't be celebrated," Hussain said.
