Former US congressman Ron Paul blamed the US and Europe for their aggressive policies in the Middle East and elsewhere (including military campaigns in Afghanistan, Iraq and Libya) which resulted in the unprecedented influx of refugees to Europe and urged the West to "stop meddling in the affairs of other countries" to solve the issue.

The Republican from Texas, who ran for president three times, called the current crisis "man-made" and "government-made."

"The reason so many are fleeing places like Syria, Libya, Afghanistan and Iraq is that US and European interventionist foreign policy has left these countries destabilized with no hopes of economic recovery. This mass migration from the Middle East and beyond is a direct result of the neocon foreign policy of regime change, invasion, and pushing 'democracy' at the barrel of a gun," Paul wrote.

Western-led military interventions were often sparked without any thought given to possible repercussions and fueled primarily by a desire to oust a certain leader, like Syria's President Bashar al-Assad or former Iraq's leader Saddam Hussein.

"Assad may not be a nice guy, but the forces that have been unleashed to overthrow him seem to be much worse and far more dangerous. No wonder people are so desperate to leave Syria," Paul noted, adding that Islamic State did not exist prior to the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The Enemy of My Enemy: Petraeus Urges Unleashing Al-Qaeda on Islamic State
As is often the case, those who are responsible for the mess in the Middle East will never take responsibility for what they have done. Instead they persist in offering wrong solutions to the issues of their own making.

The politician flayed retired four-star general David Petraeus for suggesting that the US should work with moderate members of al-Qaeda to destroy the Islamic State. "The idea that the US can salvage its disastrous Syria policy by making an alliance with al-Qaeda is horrific," he asserted.

Ron Paul offers a simple but effective solution to the refugee crisis: "stop meddling in the affairs of other countries. Embrace the prosperity that comes with a peaceful foreign policy, not the poverty that goes with running an empire. End the Empire!"
