A Chinese tourist tried transporting 3.6 kilograms of gold across the Russian border without declaring it.
The man had several gold bars hidden under the insoles of his shoes, when he was stopped by the customs control, according to the East Siberian Transport Prosecutor's Office.
The total value of the precious metal reportedly exceeded 8.6 million rubles (about $148, 000).
The 36-year-old Chinese national has been arrested and is facing criminal proceedings over "Illegal transportation of strategically important goods across the border."
The offender faces a punishment of up to 5 to 7 years in prison with a fine of up to one million rubles ($17,217).
