US Election Live Updates: Boris Johnson Optimistic About UK-US Ties Under Biden Administration

The dramatic US election saw a turning point on Saturday when Democratic contender Joe Biden was projected by all major US media outlets to be the next president of the United States. The results, however, were rejected by Donald Trump, who intends to launch a legal action with the Supreme Court, arguing the race is not over yet.

Donald Trump is planning to hold rallies in several key states in a push to continue the struggle to have votes recounted, refusing to concede defeat in the election.

The incumbent president intends to establish special vote recount teams in Georgia, Arizona, and Pennsylvania, the Axios news portal reported, citing presidential advisers.

Meanwhile, the General Services Administration has called on its Trump-appointed chief, Emily Murphy, to formally launch the procedure for a transfer of power from Trump to Joe Biden, according to a letter, which was obtained by the Politico news portal.

President Trump has not yet conceded defeat in the election despite prominent US media outlets calling Biden's victory. Biden, in turn, has already delivered a victory address to the nation alongside his running mate Kamala Harris and is already forging plans for his presidency, which, according to reports, will include overturning some of Trump's orders made during his four-year term.

"We are monitoring the process and waiting when the winner is clearly decided since the filing of appeals is still ongoing. Turkey will congratulate the one who is officially declared the president and will work with him," Celik said.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - US President Donald Trump is considering a run for president in the 2024 election, Axios reported on Monday citing two sources familiar with the matter.

Trump has been discussing with advisers his idea to run for a second presidential term in 2024, the report said.

Major US media networks have declared Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden the winner of the 2020 election.

Trump claims he won the election and said the election was stolen from him amid a massive election fraud. Trump is contesting the election results in court.

"This country has had a good relationship with the White House over the last few years, but it has a good relationship with the White House for many, many years and I have no doubt we will continue to have a very, very strong, and very close relationship with our American friends", Johnson said at a media conference. "One thing that is very exciting that you are already seeing from the incoming administration is their willingness to join the UK in the campaign to tackle climate change".

"The Secretary-General congratulates the American people for a vibrant exercise of democracy in their country’s elections last week",  United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said in a press briefing on Monday. "He congratulates the President-elect and Vice President-elect and reaffirms that the partnership between the United States and the United Nations is an essential pillar of the international cooperation needed to address the dramatic challenges facing the world today".

"I think Biden will try to extend New START in the short term and seek longer term strategic arms negotiations for a new strategic arms treaty. But being committed to the ongoing US nuclear modernization program, the nuclear arms limitations his administration is willing to seek will be modest at best", Howie Hawkins, who was the Green Party's nominee for the 2020 US presidential election, said.

When asked about the possibility of any confrontations between Russia and the US in various regions across the globe, Hawkins replied that such confrontations would remain "at the level of war games manoeuvres and conflict through proxies."

"Middle East policy [of the US] will remain basically the same, supporting the status quo and stability with Israel and the region’s autocratic regimes. The war on terrorism will shift away from conventional forces and more to special operations and drones", he believes.

"I do not expect changes in the US policy on Turkey, [and] neither on Syria, nor the Eastern Mediterranean, nor the Black Sea region. The US will continue the regional policy aimed against Turkey and Russia. With that in mind, Turkey has to give more importance to the relations with Russia and Iran, putting regional policy at the centre of the foreign policy priorities", former Foreign Minister Sukru Sina Gurel said.

He added that relations between countries cannot be built solely on personal interaction and that organizations and not persons will play a significant role in Washington's foreign policy, including in the issue of the Middle East.

"Meaning, Biden will not take back the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by the US but he is likely to take a step back regarding the recognition of the annexation of the Golan Heights [by Israel] and the bizarre peace plan for the west bank of the Jordan River, which is under Israel's total control. This policy will put Israel in a complicated situation", the former minister mentioned.

He also speculated that Washington could return to the nuclear deal with Iran, which would make it closer to the European states, but otherwise there would be no drastic changes in relation to Iran or Israel.

During his time in office, Trump initiated several controversial initiatives such as pulling out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, also known as the Iranian nuclear deal, as well as the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with Russia. Among his Middle Eastern initiatives were recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and a peace plan for Palestine, dubbed as the deal of the century. As the US administration is about to take power, politicians and experts across the world are wondering which elements of Trump's foreign policy will be sustained by Biden's White House.

"I hope that the North will take a discreet, wise and flexible approach amid this period of transition", South Korea's minister of unification, Lee In-young, said during a press briefing, as cited by the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

The unification minister added that Biden's victory in the presidential election may bring significant changes to US policy in the region, raising concern that Pyongyang could begin to carry out provocations, the agency reported.

Lee called on Pyongyang to fulfil its agreements with both Seoul and Washington in order to progress relations and sustain peace in the region, the agency said.

Denuclearisation talks between North Korean officials and the Trump administration stalled in 2019 following a pair of summits. A leaked UN Security Council report in August alleged that North Korea has obtained miniaturised nuclear warheads that can be attached to ballistic missiles.

"We have noticed that Biden announced being successfully elected, and, as we understand, the result of the presidential election will be determined in accordance with the US legislation and established procedures", Chinese Foreign Ministry Wang Wenbin said.

The spokesman added that "China would act in conformity with the international practice", and promote the US-Sino dialogue on the basis of mutual interest.

"The new government has not come to power yet. After it comes to power, we will make decisions in accordance with the new environment and conditions", Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said at a briefing, while answering questions on whether Biden's representatives had contacted Tehran over issues related to the nuclear deal before or after the elections were called in several states.

According to the Iranian foreign minister, Tehran needs to look at the actions of the future US president.

He noted that the nuclear deal could not be "reopened" for the discussion and that the future US administration must change its approach to decision-making and communication with the whole world and Iran.

"I think we should take things at one step at a time. We've had now a process in the United States which has been ongoing for a while and which now led to us welcoming the victory in the election of Joe Biden ... Clearly, it's still very early days. I think that the EU is waiting for new the president-elect to take office before starting to comment on what this will imply when it comes to our relationship", Eric Mamer said at a briefing.

"We are now looking forward to cooperation with the new administration, and the spirit of cooperation will be based on shared principles ... We want to combat all of the challenges that there are in the world today", Peter Stano added.

"Germans have directly experienced the importance of the US role for freedom and democracy in the world. We have directly experienced and we know how important the American-German friendship and transatlantic partnership is for Europe and for the world", German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters. "I am offering my heartfelt congratulation to Joe Biden on his being elected as the 46th president of the US. Joe Biden has his longtime experience in domestic and foreign policy to offer. He knows Germany and Europe well. I enjoy remembering pleasant meetings and conversations I had with him".
