On Monday, a video emerged online in which George Floyd was filmed pinned to the ground by a white police officer Derek Chauvin, who was pressing his knee against the man’s neck. Floyd was repeatedly telling the police officer that he could not breathe until becoming unresponsive. Later, he died at a local hospital.

According to the Minneapolis Police Department's release, four officers appeared at the scene after a call of a forgery in progress and found Floyd sitting on top of a car and appearing to be under the influence. The release said Floyd physically resisted officers when they handcuffed him, noting that he appeared to be suffering from medical distress.

Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. A total of four police officers have been fired in connection with the man's death.

Following Floyd's death, protests erupted all over the country, with the National Guard called to the scene and curfews imposed in several major cities to quell the protesters.

US President Donald Trump said earlier that he requested a federal investigation into the incident and pledged that "justice will be served". Later, he called out the protesters, saying they are disgracing the memory of George Floyd, adding that if tougher action is not taken by local authorities, "the federal government will step in and use the military and make arrests".
