A powerful earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck 252 km west of Ferndale, California at 7:02 a.m. UTC, the US Geological Survey reported. The seismic activity was registered in the ocean at a depth of 10 kilometers.

There are no reports of destruction or casualties caused by the quake. No tsunami alert has been issued in relation to the tremor.

As California lies on the San Andreas Fault, the state is frequently hit by earthquakes, some more powerful than others depending on the amount of built-up pressure along the tectonic plates.

In July of last year, California was shaken by a major 7.1-magnitude earthquake that caused damage to buildings.
