WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — About 100-150 Daesh proponents have been detected in the Central and South America region, US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) Commander Adm. Kurt Tidd stated in a briefing.

"I would say it is in the hundreds," Tidd said on Thursday about the number of Daesh supporters. "At this point, it is fighter flow from this region over to the main fights that ISIL [Daesh] is engaged in."

Tidd noted, however, that some countries have provided higher estimates of the number of supporters for the terror group, and urged better information sharing in the region amid the growing trend of radicalization.

"We are all going to have to share information much more effectively than we might have been willing to in the past in order to share a common picture and understanding of what the threat is," Tidd said.

The Islamic State, also known as Daesh, is a designated terrorist group outlawed in Russia and many other countries. The group has seized large areas in Syria and Iraq, and declared an Islamic caliphate on territories under its control.

Kidd said his recruiters have a harder time finding Daesh mercenaries in the region because there just aren't very many Muslims. But there are plenty of hungry alienated psychos.
