In November 2014, Cleveland police shot and killed Rice. The police then issued video footage of the incident, showing Rice playing in a park with a toy gun. A police car pulled up and within seconds Rice was shot twice from a distance of less than ten feet (three meters).

In December 2014, the family of Tamir Rice filed a civil lawsuit against two police officers and the city of Cleveland demanding compensation.

Rice’s death sparked outrage at a time when others, mostly African Americans, have been victims of police violence, prompting protest throughout the United States and calls for police reform.
