“It is absolutely clear that in the past few days the West has ramped up its campaign of slander against Russia by claiming that this country had a hand in the downing of the Malaysian airliner, about Russian troops allegedly fighting in eastern Ukraine, about our burning desire to have a confrontation with the West, etc.,” Naryshkin wrote in an article carried by the Moscow-based Izvestiya newspaper.

He accused the Western governments of using angry accusations from some little-known people in the former Soviet Baltic republics to make Europeans feel scared of Russia.

In its effort to give Russia a bad name in the world the United States turned to European politicians who had in the past six months sallied their reputation by canceling their planned visits to Russia, “apparently after getting a last-minute phone call from Washington,” Naryshkin added.

“I myself have received from them all kinds of clumsy written explanations as to the reasons why they could not come, only to be told later, in a confidential manner of course, about the true reasons for such cancellations,” Naryshkin noted.

“[US]President Barack Obama is eager to have a wide-ranging trade agreement with the EU signed before his term is over in order to shut out Russia and brand our entire nation as ‘uncivilized’”, Sergei Naryshkin wrote in conclusion.

The EU and the US imposed sweeping economic sanctions on Russia over its alleged involvement in the crisis in eastern Ukraine.

In the latest wave of anti-Russian sanctions, the United States in March 2015 the United States imposed further sanctions against Russia alongside the sanctions imposed in March 2014 concerning asset freeze and travel ban for certain listed persons.
