“American officials are in touch with Tunisian authorities, and the United States is prepared to offer assistance to their investigation,” Earnest said on Wednesday.

The identities of the attackers are unknown, Earnest said, but the attackers are cowardly, and the United States condemns the attackers and extends sympathies to the Tunisian people.

Earnest noted that the United States is proud of the cooperation it has accomplished with Tunisia on counterterrorism and broader security issues, and will continue to stand with Tunisians against violence.

The last terrorist incident in Tunisia was on January 3, 2015 when Islamic militants killed a Tunisian policeman by cutting his throat and stabbing his heart. Previous media reports indicate nine suspects have been arrested in that attack.
