China's new J-20 stealth fighter jet bears similarities to an experimental prototype for a fifth-generation fighter jet produced by Russia's MiG aircraft corporation, the deputy editor of Russian military magazine "Arsenal of the Fatherland" Dmitry Drozdenko told Sputnik.

China unveiled two Chengdu J-20 stealth fighters at the Zhuhai air show in Beijing on Tuesday. While the exact specifications of the aircraft remain under wraps, to all appearances the jets have been designed to match the stealth capabilities of fifth-generation fighter aircraft such as the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor and Russia's Sukhoi PAK FA.

Drozdenko told Sputnik that the J-20 he saw at the air show appears similar to a Russian prototype fifth-generation jet fighter, the MiG 1.44, which was finally displayed last year.

"In my opinion, the machine is based on the Russian MiG 1.44. That plane was created to compete with the PAK FA at the preliminary design stage, and made its maiden flight in 2000. The Chinese plane is very similar. Although it hasn't been announced officially, the J-20 uses our AL-31F engine, developed by Salut, which the Chinese bought for half a billion dollars," he revealed.

The MiG aircraft corporation began to design a fifth-generation Multirole Tactical Fighter in 1983, in response to US efforts to develop an Advanced Tactical Fighter, which eventually materialized as the F-22.

During this time the Sukhoi aircraft company also developed a prototype fifth-generation aircraft, the Su-47. The prototype made its maiden flight in 1997, and paved the way for the PAK FA currently in development for the Russian Aerospace Forces.

In 2000 MiG flew a secret prototype of the fifth-generation fighter, but the project was eventually dropped in favor of the PAK FA. The 1.44 prototype remained under wraps until last year, when it was unveiled at the MAKS 2015 International Air Show in Moscow.

Stealth aircraft are designed to avoid detection using a number of advanced techniques that reduce the reflection or emission of radar signals. The most advanced stealth technology may reduce the plane's radar signature to a level similar to that produced by a bird.

The design of the MiG 1.44 had some stealth aspects, and it was planned that the aircraft would be coated with "radar absorbing material" to improve stealth. The twin AL-41F engines gave the aircraft a "supersonic cruise" capability, and were fitted with thrust-vectoring nozzles.

Drozdenko is not the first analyst to note the similarity between the MiG 1.44 and the Chengdu J-20, photographs of which began circulating in 2010.

Comparing the two fifth-generation prototypes, Defense Aviation spotted "startling similarities between the Chinese  J-20 and the canceled Russian MiG-1.44."

As a stealth fighter, the J-20 is not as optimized for combat as the MiG 1.44, but both planes "have similarly styled delta wing canard configurations and a V-Shaped tail section with closely mounted engines," analyst Cavin Dsouza wrote.

It's a tribute to Russia and the Russian People.
      - China has worked 30 years with J7/Mig21, which has Delta Wings.
      - China has worked 20 years on J10, which is a Delta Wings + Cannard design.
      - China has worked 10 years on JF17, which is DSI + Delta Wing + Lerx design.
      - and now are working on the J20, which is Delta Wing + DSI + LERX + Cannard,
      - try putting those things into a dual-engine design and i can't think of any other look J-20 could be like.

Hope Russia charges China extra on sales of weapons to it from Russia for the reverse engineering that they do on them.

Some Russians seems to believe that the Chinese are not capable of producing their own ingenious military equipment. This is a very wrong assumption. Do not underestimate China's capabilities in this field.

the chinese are specialized in STEALING technology - and then they create their own ''patents'' that do not differ much from the ''original''

Russian politicians who force Russian military complex to work with China in manner to sell them few samples of their latest technological achievements only to make reverse engineering and shamelessly come out with copy of Russian airplane. Someone can ask why they are forced to buy Russian jet engines if they copy everything that is not nailed on the floor.

Reason is simple, mechanical parts they disassemble measure and reproduce and if all has been done perfectly it will work perfectly. The problem become with electronic components which are programmable and they have extremely hard encryption which the latest the strongest computer would crack in couple of hundred years as encryption code is so complicated and involves well over 500 bits and is unimaginably difficult to crack it.

As they cannot come to Russians and bluntly asking them for source code and encryption in order to make their copies work. That and only that is reason why Chinese have to purchase whole engines, the rest as I said has been shamelessly or outright criminally copied from their only supporter in the world.

Chinese are untrustworthy and Russia should understand that enemy of their enemy is not necessarily their friend. In case with China it proves that China does not give dam about friendship and respect.

Once China become real economic powerhouse when average monthly salary will be on our level of about €2,700 we will all see that China is nothing better than USA. China will thanks to their sheer size in land and population demand world leading role and they will support and enforce this demand with unparalleled military might. Russia is making huge mistake by assisting them in their goal to become unique superpower on the planet. Chinese are extremely arrogant and convinced that they are the smartest on planet. Just venture to talk to Chinese in Shanghai, Beijing or even Hong Kong, and you will realise that it is their political course to convince their people that they are superior to other. Something as Obama'a wet dreams about American in-dispensability.

Russia wake up as you will be in for nasty shock once they level up with you as far as technology is concern and they will do as they have 11x more human resources than you. Watch out or it might be all too late.

      asimpleguest, is that right?
the whole world seems to lay claim to China's design.

who's right? US, Europe, or Russia? they all have the same claims.

To me the obvious explanation is that China bought the design after the development of the MIG 1.44 was not continued.

These fighters only need to make the costs of potential conflicts too risky , and they are successful.

Korz53, Russia should outsource production to China to reduce costs.

Jackov, Self sufficiency more important then cost savings. (besides outsourcing will only give China all of technology by reverse engineering).

Russia and China are ironing all copyright and copycat issues. Reason Russia hesitates selling RD 180 engines ti China.
Those talking this and that, are just people without knowledge. China, cannot have west pay for workers as it will increase inflation in a heartbeat.

Here is how. Say China pair pay with U.S, U.K standards and benefits.
What will happen. West companies ARE inside China. in 3 years or less, prices will rise to west levels. The corporations want that cash. Fuel will be more expensive. ALL. Now consumerism, which is what will raise all, will increase at west levels. Now they can afford all, and the corporations know this. The Supply vs demand policies will take over all prices will be increase too.
Gov expenditures will soar. In no time you'll have a China with nothing but a growing debt , and an economy contracting as corporations will move elsewhere because of the profit losses. They want CHEAP manufacturing. China collapse will begin.

The plane. The first part of the nose and inlets come from NOT the MIG, but YAK 141 freestyle. That U.S bought a license to build the F35.
The tail DO resemble the 1.44 Raptor Killer. This plane , was visited by ABC news. They tried to get info. They were told, this plane is way more stealthy than the F22.
They began a mess. How? It have right angles, did Russia made a breakthrough in stealth?
the answer lies with Pyotr Ufimtsev, that in 1964 published the F117, angles and how to avoid radar detection. Soviets refused then to sponsor him and dismantle his team.
Telling him we, don't need that tech. .. Russia had way better tech in 1964!!!
So this Chinese copy is nothing. But now hopefully, China become as trusted as U.S.
U.S can copy Soviet tech. And Russian.
But try not to. Although , corporations will try. The new Cadillac look exactly as the car for Putin. I mean is a copy carbon. The lights the outside the interior are the same. \
LACKS the about 900 plus horse power engine.

The interior of the Dreamliner. But Russia as always doesn't complain. Russia just builds more and more. And add things you cannot get .
Russia been in that game FOREVER. What it always do? INNOVATE.

Russia is CHEAP!!! A pensioner can live with 150.00 U.S dollars equivalent. Try that in China or U.S.. You CANNOT!!!

Russia is cheap still It can produce cheap. And with some tweaks can be even cheaper.
Looks like Yak 141 front and MiG 1.44 rear..
