Senior Chief Petty Officer Scott Dayton, who was serving with Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve, died on November 24 after sustaining injuries in an improvised explosive device blast in northern Syria, the US Navy said in a press release on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — According to the release, Dayton died from wounds sustained in an improvised explosive device blast in the vicinity of Ayn Issa in northern Syria. 

Operation Inherent Resolve is a US military operation against Daesh in Syria and Iraq as part of the wider US-led coalition campaign to destroy the terrorist gruop.

The coalition consists of more than 60 nations and has been conducting airstrikes against Daesh in Syria and Iraq since 2014. The US and coalition’s action in Syria though have not been approved by the UN Security Council or the country’s legitimate government of Bashar Assad.

Daesh is outlawed in Russia and numerous other countries throughout the world.
