Tehran's provisional Friday Prayers Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ahmad Khatami expressed hope on Friday that US President-elect Donald Trump would avoid sticking to US policy of tensions with Tehran.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Trump secured an unexpected victory in the presidential election on Tuesday with 290 electoral votes against his rival Hillary Clinton's 232. The inauguration will be held on January 20, 2017.

"[Trump] be careful not give lion's tail another twist; I hope you will hear these words and realize that the Islamic Iran has a manner and a motto and that is: we will resist until our last breath… We hope that the new US president will fulfill his recent statements that he does not want tensions with any other country, and if not, at least come to know the Iranian nation and avoid doing anything wrong," Khatami said, as quoted by Fars News Agency.

The preacher recalled that Iran's policy was "correct" as the country had not interfered in other countries' internal affairs and respected the people of the world and their choices.

During his pre-election rally in September, Trump said that if the Iranian navy inappropriately approached US warships, Tehran's navy would be "shot out" of the water. On Thursday, Chief of Staff for the Iranian Armed Forces Mohammad Baqeri said that Trump's threats toward the Iranian navy should be perceived as a joke.

Trump also suggested he would dismantle the "disastrous deal with Iran," referring to the mid-2015 nuclear deal, negotiated by the P5+1 negotiators China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, plus Germany.

The US-Iranian relations have been strained for decades, following the triumph of the 1979 Islamic Revolution, when the US-backed Iranian shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was ousted, and Shia cleric Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini became the nation's leader.

In May, the Iranian parliament ordered the government to seek compensation from Washington for its alleged anti-Iranian actions, in particular, the Nojeh coup plot, when the military planned to overthrow the newly established Islamic Republic of Iran, after US-backed Pahlavi was ousted.

The parliament also listed the US involvement in the 1953 Iranian coup d'etat, when then-Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh was overthrown in favor of strengthening the rule of Pahlavi. The coup was managed by UK and US intelligence, under the names Operation Boot and the TPAJAX Project respectively.
