A Czech mechanic, arrested on his way to Syria in winter, wanted to join the Daesh terror group to kill US and Russian soldiers, a Czech broadcaster said Thursday.

PRAGUE (Sputnik) — The man, identified only as Jan S., was detained in Turkey last February after buying a ticket to a border city near Syria and was handed over to Czech authorities. In August, he was charged with attempted terrorism by a Plzen court.

Court files, seen by the Czech Radio, showed that the terror suspect admitted he had plans to kill US and Russian troops that are fighting Daesh militants in Syria, including taking part in their executions. He reportedly said he wanted to help Daesh expand its presence in the Middle East.

The suspect is reportedly the first Czech man caught trying to join the notorious Islamist group. The Czech Radio said that an inquiry had been launched into how he came to be so radicalized. If he is found guilty, the man can face up to 12 years in jail on terror charges.
