US ground troops participated for the first time in maneuvers against Daesh, joining Iraqi government forces in the offensives south of Mosul, Sky News Arabia reported Thursday citing Kurdish forces.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Sky News Arabia, an attack on Daesh locations in southern areas surrounding the city of Mosul was the first instance of US ground forces fighting alongside the Iraqi army in the conflict.

The media outlet reported that the ground forces were supported by armored vehicles, tanks and artillery.

Iraqi Kurdistan troops, the Peshmerga, are at the moment engaged in an offensive to liberate Iraqi Mosul.

Earlier in the day, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that the US-led coalition against Daesh carried out 27 airstrikes in Syria and Iraq against the terror group on Wednesday.

Daesh is a terrorist organization outlawed in the United States, Russia and many other countries.

A US-led coalition of over 60 nations has been conducting airstrikes against Daesh in Iraq and Syria since 2014.
