A Taliban spokesman denied reports that the militant group was going to hold talks with the United States in Qatar on Thursday and possibly Friday.

"We do not have any plans for negotiations with anyone in Qatar. Regarding the negotiations, there is no new changes in the policy of Islamic Emirates of Afghanistan," said Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for Taliban, as quoted by AFP.

The United States is also not scheduled to take part in any meetings in Doha, said Bernadette Meehan, a spokeswoman for the US National Security Council.

Earlier on Thursday it was reported that senior sources in the Taliban, as well as high-ranking Pakistani military officials and diplomats confirmed that the talks would take place.

US forces toppled the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001. In December 2014, the NATO-led mission International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), tasked with tackling insurgency in the country, was replaced with a non-combat mission.
