18:56 GMT 18.04.2016 (Updated: 10:53 GMT 06.08.2022) At least one US citizen was killed in Saturday’s earthquake in Ecuador, US Department of State spokesperson John Kirby announced in a press briefing on Monday.
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — A powerful earthquake hit coastal Ecuador late on Saturday, with an epicenter near the town of Pedernales in which more than 260 people died.
"At this time, I can tell you that we are aware of the death of one US citizen," Kirby stated. "We are still working with the Ecuadorian authorities to verify the welfare and whereabouts of all US citizens in the area at the time of the earthquake."
