Protests swept across Belarus after the presidential election on 9 August, which saw Alexander Lukashenko re-elected for a sixth term. While electoral authorities maintain that Lukashenko received over 80 percent of the vote, the opposition insists that his key contender, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, won the election.

Supporters of the Belarusian opposition have taken to the streets of Minsk for an unauthorised march, a RIA Novosti correspondent has reported.

At 18:00 (15:00 GMT), protesters gathered in Freedom Square, where two cathedrals are located, demanding the release of arrested protesters and political prisoners.

Law enforcement in Minsk has taken a group of journalists who planned to cover the unauthorised opposition rally in the centre of the city to a police station "to establish their identity", according to a police spokesperson.

Following this, the police have begun to urge those who have gathered in Freedom Square to disperse.
