Moscow is shocked by the cynical murder of Russian citizen journalist Pavel Sheremet in central Kiev, according to official statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russia is shocked by the cynical murder in central Kiev of its citizen, journalist Pavel Sheremet, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

"We are shocked by the cynical murder of Russian citizen Pavel Sheremet in central Kiev. He was known and respected in Russia as a journalist and a high-caliber professional," the ministry said in extending its deepest condolences to his friends, relatives, and the journalistic community.

The ministry described Sheremet, who died in a car bomb attack early Wdnesday, as a "man of principle who was often critical of authorities."

"His civil stance was clearly expressed in speeches and publications, his view did not always coincide with that of the official. However, in Russia, despite differences of opinion, he was never threatened with physical violence for professional activity," it stressed.
