Greek Prosecutor General Submits Two Claims Against Ex-Finance Minister

Greek Prosecutor General Efterpi Koutzamani has submitted two claims to the Greek parliament against the country’s ex-Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis for his attempts to organize an alternative payment system that would have bypassed Athens' negotiations with its creditors, local media reported Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On July 27, ex-Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis confirmed he prepared a backup plan in case Greece failed to reach an agreement with its creditors and the country left the eurozone.

The working group discussed the creation of a parallel payment system explained by Varoufakis and authorized by the Greek prime minister.

The group was often described to the media as intending to restore the drachma, the country’s pre-euro national currency.

According to the Ekathimerini daily, the claims concerning the ex-finance minister were filed by Apostolos Gletsos, the mayor of the Greek town of Stylida, who is accusing Varoufakis of treason, and lawyer Panayiotis Giannopoulos, who said the ex-minister’s actions resulted in EU-member pressure on Greece.

In order for the Greek High Court to to indict Varoufakis, the parliament must deprive the ex-minister of his political integrity.

Yanis Varoufakis resigned on July 6, stating that he was aware that his resignation could help the prime minister reach an agreement with the country's creditors.
