Representatives of the United States may take part in St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in June amid US and EU sanctions on Russia, a source in the forum’s organizing committee told Sputnik Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The SPIEF is an annual event, dedicated to economic and business issues. It is scheduled for June 1-3 this year. Russian President Putin has repeatedly participated in the event.

During SPIEF-2016, Putin said that Russia is looking forward to attract foreign investment.

"It may be. We have a lot of invitees and we are waiting for a confirmation of participation," the source said, answering the question about the possibility of participation of the United States in the forum.

He noted that India, the delegation of which will be headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will be a guest country at the forum, adding that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has also confirmed his participation.
