“[T]he President is announcing nearly $500 million in public-private investment to strengthen American manufacturing by investing in cutting-edge technologies through a new, textiles-focused manufacturing institute … and by sharpening the capabilities of small manufacturers through Manufacturing Extension Partnership competitions,” the statement read.
The White House explained that $150 million would go toward the Defense Department’s textile-focused manufacturing institute competition that would invite leading manufacturers, universities and non-profits to form “a new manufacturing hub focused on revolutionary fibers and textile technologies.”
“The President’s Fiscal Year 2016 Budget, to create jobs and strengthen America’s leadership in advanced manufacturing technology, provides the resources to double the number of manufacturing innovation institutes nationwide to 16 by the end of 2016 and fulfills the President’s goal of building a network of up to 45 institutes over the decade,” the statement read.
In contrast, the White House noted, the Republican budget entrenches the harmful sequester levels of funding, and proposes to eliminate the manufacturing extension partnership.
On Tuesday, House Republicans unveiled their budget proposal that seeks to eliminate President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, and spend more on the US’ defense budget, a plan that the White House disproves.
In February, Obama proposed a nearly $4 trillion budget for fiscal year 2016, which sought to help middle-class Americans, improve US infrastructure and end defense spending cuts, according to the White House.
