Members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) intend to devise a structure similar to that of the European Union, the organization's secretary-general said Thursday.

SOCHI (Sputnik) — The secretary-general added that there were plenty of opportunities for cooperation between ASEAN and Russia, in particular in the spheres of economy, information and technology development.

"We are building a structure similar to the European Union, and creating such mechanisms that could contribute to our region's development," Le Luong Minh stated at the Russia-ASEAN Business Forum in Russia's resort city of Sochi.

On May 19-20, Sochi hosts the Russia-ASEAN summit, marking the 20th anniversary of Russia-ASEAN relations. The association comprises Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.
