NEW DELHI, December 2 (Sputnik) — Voting continues in the second phase of state assembly election in the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir and of Jharkhand amid heightened security, a local police official told Sputnik Tuesday.
"We have identified 42 hyper-sensitive stations and made tight security arrangements in these areas. Our forces are prepared to foil any terrorist activities. All routes of infiltration have been plugged to ensure a free and fair election process," Deputy Inspector General of police, Udhampur-Doda Range, Gareeb Das said.
In the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand, which accounts for almost half of the India's mineral resources, polling is underway for twenty assembly seats. Security in the state has been increased due to Maoist rebel groups, active in the area.
There was a record turnout in the first phase of the assembly elections, held on November 25, with more than 71 percent of the electorate casting their ballot.
State assembly elections in India are held every five years by universal adult suffrage.
