MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to Mr. Drozdenko, the Leningrad Region is also developing environmental, pilgrimage and military historical tourism in addition to traditional routes to historical monuments and manors.
“The 47th region expects to host two million tourists in 2016 and, at least, to double the number of visitors in the next 10 years,” Mr. Drozdenko said. “Tikhvin, Staraya Ladoga, Vyborg and Gatchina – the list of the cities attracting tourists from other regions and countries goes on.”
The press service of the regional administration said that to accommodate the tourists the region needs to restore its unique landmarks as well as to build modern roads, hotels and eating places.
“Year after year, tourists have become more and more demanding, hence we need to develop the infrastructure and create attractive sightseeing routes,” Mr. Drozdenko said.
The project will center on the tourist recreation cluster in Staraya Ladoga and also include the Ivangorod and Koporye fortresses, the Korela Fortress in Priozersk and the city of Tikhvin.
The region is also a part of major international sightseeing routes, such as Via Hanseatica, Castle to Castle and Red Route, designed for Chinese tourists.
