The search for the animals that escaped from a zoo in Georgian capital of Tbilisi following the Saturday flooding is continuing and it is yet impossible to tell exactly how many of them are still on the loose, a spokesperson for the Tbilisi zoo said.

TBILISI (Sputnik) — On Saturday evening, a heavy rainstorm hit Tbilisi, damaging power lines and causing multiple buildings to collapse as floodwaters rushed through the capital. At least 12 people have died due to the flooding, according to the local media.

On Sunday, Georgian media reported that some of the zoo animals died and more than 30, including lions, tigers, bears and wolves have escaped after the flooding destroyed their enclosures. Tbilisi residents have been warned to stay indoors.

“At the moment it is hard to tell the exact number of animals that escaped the zoo. The employees of the zoo and the rescue teams continue searching for the animals.”

On Sunday evening, Georgian TV channels started showing animals shot dead by Tbilisi special services. The media reports raised concerns among local residents, animal rights activists and the zoo management, that now demands explanations.
