No Word From Mugabe as Zimbabwe's Ruling Party Ultimatum on Resignation Expires

Zimbabwe's incumbent President was given until noon (10:00 GMT) by the country's ruling party Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU PF) to step down or to face impeachment. After this term was expired, several actions have been made.

HARARE (Sputnik) — On Sunday, the central committee of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front Party (ZANU PF) suspended Mugabe from the post of first secretary of the party, and also urged him to resign from the post of president by noon on Monday. However, Mugabe, in his address to the nation, did not announce his resignation.

As the deadline passed on Monday, no confirmation of Mugabe's resignation appeared.

Moreover, the Zimbabwean military's leadership and the members of the country's ruling party, are considering the possibility of seizing the property of President Robert Mugabe and his family, media reported Monday.

Meanwhile, social media reports that the ruling party has begun a process to impeach the president.

A 93-year-old Mugabe, who has been leading the country for over 30 years as both president and prime minister, now is confined to his house by soldiers.

On Wednesday, the military took control of the television center in the capital of Zimbabwe as well as the president’s residence. As local media reported Monday, the Zimbabwean National Liberation War Veterans Organization will request the High Court to declare the legality of the takeover of power by the country's military.

On Saturday, hundreds of thousands of mostly young people flooded the streets of Harare. Besides, the military deployed armored vehicles in the Zimbabwean capital of Harare and took control of the state-owned broadcaster.

The political situation in Zimbabwe has been worsening since after Mugabe dismissed and ousted from the ruling party his first vice president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, a likely successor who enjoys the army’s support. The nation’s defense forces chief Constantine Chiwenga warned the president early last week to stop the purge within the party. ZANU-PF nominates Emmerson Mnangagwa as a candidate for new president of Zimbabwe, earlier he became the new leader of the ruling party.
