Chinese Ebola Treatment Center in Liberia Ready to Open: Reports

The first medical facility in Liberia, designed to fight Ebola and fully built and managed by a foreign nation, will open its doors on Tuesday.

MOSCOW, November 24 (Sputnik) — The construction of a Chinese medical center to treat Ebola patients in Liberia has been completed, Xinhua news agency reported Monday.

According to Xinhua, the center, which was funded by China, is the first medical facility in a country hit by Ebola fully built and managed by a foreign nation.

The 100-bed center will open on Tuesday, the agency said.

Earlier, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Zhang Yue claimed Beijing would deliver 60 ambulances, 100 motorcycles, 10,000 health kits and 150,000 sets of personal protective equipment to the countries hardest hit by the Ebola virus disease.

According to the World Health Organization's data as of November 18, 5,459 people have died in the current Ebola outbreak, from a total of 15,351 confirmed, probable, and suspected cases.

The ongoing Ebola epidemic started in southern Guinea in December 2013 and soon spread to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal. The latter two countries were declared free of the virus in October.

Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of those infected. Although there is no officially approved medication for the virus, several countries, including Russia, are currently working on vaccines.
